SBIR, Patent Baristas and Seeking Cures

Welcome Back Senators! We hope you enjoyed your recess.

There is buzz that SBIR may make it on to the Senate calendar this session, but we do not have a definite date just yet. Stay tuned!

This act will increase access to early-stage funding for treatments and cures for debilitating diseases. With so many new treatments and developments at stake, we do hope that the Senate will move on this bill and begin negotiations with the House, resulting in a final bill this year.

Patent Baristas recently featured a post on SBIR. They cover SBA’s proposed rules to increase SBIR award threshold amounts, the first increase since 1992.

SBA is proposing to increase Phase I awards from $100,000 to $150,000 and Phase II awards from $750,000 to $1,000,000.

This post also discusses a program in Kentucky that provides matching funds for KY-based SBIR and STTR grant recipients of up to $100,000 for Phase I awardees and $500,000 for Phase II grant recipients for each year of the award. State initiatives are a great way to support businesses like emerging biotechnology companies.

Patent Baristas focuses on intellectual property issues, which is also important to biotech companies – check it out!
